April 2 - Conferences for Montessori professionnals

For Montessori professionnals only
In French and English

9:00 to 16:00, Quebec Montessori School

DONNA BRYANT GOERTZ will present:

  • Freedom and Responsibility:  Can’t Have One Without the Other (Children’s House) ?
How can we set limits and circumscribe boundaries to support authentic freedom and distinguish freedom and license?  How does responsibility to others serve as the limit of personal freedom?  What role does control of impulses, delay of gratification, and self-discipline play in promoting healthy freedom.  We will explore how children gain understanding and responsibility through provision for their own activity and experience, and not through our preaching and direct teaching.

  • The Cycle of Activity:  One of the Child’s Basic Needs (Children’s House), Foundation for Big Work (Elementary)
What is a cycle of activity?  It’s not a matter of life and death, but . . .  it is as basic to healthy development as food and sleep, love and limits.  Let’s learn to recognize and support the child’s cycle of activity, his means of developing the long and deep concentration, the source of authentic traits of a dynamic childhood. How does the cycle of activity at home form the foundation for Montessori Elementary Education at school?

  • Maximum Effort and Independence:  Helping Children Grow a Strong, Flexible, and Resilient Sense of Self
Independence and maximum effort give the child authentic self-worth, rather than the superficial and prideful form of self-esteem typical of recent times.  How do we arrange for experiences of independence and maximum effort for the child?  How do we provide for and respect the child’s need to struggle.
  • Relationships in the Classroom:  You, Me and Us
Whether with adults or other children, our child needs the most and best support for the natural and independent development of relationships at school. These habits of relating last a lifetime and affect future life at home and out in the world.  Each year, at each age, our children struggle to learn the skills for healthy friendships.  How can we empower them to recognize and bring out the best in themselves and others while keeping everyone safe?  How can we ensure a more secure, productive, and happy community for our children by respecting the value of conflict?

"Children who are not yet peaceful"

Charting the progress of twelve children in a real classroom, and following in the footsteps of Maria Montessori, educator Donna Bryant Goertz shows how positive change can occur given the proper environment. In each case she describes a child's transformation in becoming a responsible citizen of the classroom community. Readers will learn how to apply Montessori methods to virtually any early elementary environment.
